Laser Hair Removal (IPL)

Nobody wants excess body hair and pesky peach fuzz, especially in parts of the body where hair should be minimal or absent altogether. The best way to get fuzz-free is with laser hair removal using intense pulsed light (IPL), a standard solution that effectively treats the issue. This proven hair reduction method is highly effective at achieving smooth, hair-free skin for the long term. While shaving, waxing, and tweezing are temporary solutions, they pale compared to the long-lasting results of laser hair removal.

If you are seeking a permanent way to get rid of unwanted hair once and for all, our  removal treatments using IPL or traditional laser are the best choices!

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a treatment that helps to permanently eliminate hair and its follicles on the face and body. It effectively reduces unwanted hair on various parts of the face and body. Multiple sessions are typically required to achieve optimal results, as the treatment utilizes heat to target and remove hair from the follicles. The heat applied during each session inhibits hair growth from within the follicles causing a reduction in hair loss.

By selectively targeting and destroying hair, the treatment shortens the lifespan of the hair follicles. While not every hair is permanently eliminated nor all at once, laser hair removal significantly reduces hair thickness and overall growth. Laser hair removal offers a long-term solution for diminishing unwanted hair, reducing hair thickness and growth across multiple treatment sessions.

Although Laser Hair Removal is an investment in both time and money, it does permanently destroy the hair and its follicles for smooth skin long-term. Targeting the hair itself rather than the surrounding skin, laser hair removal minimizes the impact of damage on the skin’s surface. Laser hair removal is an incredibly versatile treatment that can be used on various areas of the body and face, targeting unwanted hair effectively wherever it may be present!

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal relies on emitting a beam of light that transforms into heat via a handheld device, which glides across the skin. The heat emitted then selectively absorbs pigment in the hair root, effectively destroying it and leading to permanent hair reduction so that the hair no longer grows in its four distinct phases: anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase), telogen (resting phase), and exogen (shedding phase). Light-based hair removal (both laser and IPL) destroys the hair follicle in the anagen (growing) phase, which is why several sessions are necessary. The hair follicles are not injured if they are in another growth phase during the treatment.

Different skin tones require varying laser settings to stunt the hair’s regular growth pattern, and a single laser may not be suitable for all skin tones. Darker skin types are more prone to burns due to the increased amount of melanin in darker skin and always require special attention and expertise from your provider. Darker skin tones are also susceptible to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) due to increased melanin, so always ensure your provider is well-versed in laser hair removal. It’s also essential to avoid sun exposure and tanning for four weeks before your hair removal treatment for all skin types. The sun and tanning increases melanin production and can make patients prone to burns or hyperpigmentation. Wearing high-quality sunscreen and avoiding long periods of direct sun exposure usually provide adequate protection.

In addition to potential challenges with skin tones, the color of the hair may also affect the results. White, gray, and light-colored hair pose challenges for effective hair removal as the laser may struggle to detect and effectively destroy the hair’s color. While laser hair removal is most effective on coarse, dense, and dark hair, recent advancements now allow for treating light and fine hair more effectively.

The device is applied to each area sequentially during the treatment session, varying from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the location. Approximately five to 10 days post-treatment, the hair will shed, indicating that the hair follicle has been destroyed. Hair regrowth gradually diminishes with subsequent treatments, resulting in permanent hair reduction. Most patients typically observe an initial decrease in hair growth following the first treatment. However, after completing an entire series of three to six treatments, most patients experience permanent hair loss of approximately 90% or more. Future touch-up treatments may be necessary to address any new hair growth that may develop.

Our Laser Hair Removal Treatments

At CARE Esthetics New Orleans, we utilize two technologies for “laser” hair removal, Viora V-IPL and the Fotona TimeWalker Aesthetic Laser.

IPL Hair Removal (For Body Hair Removal)

The main modality we use to achieve hair removal for our clients is IPL therapy with the Viora V-IPL device. It’s not technically a laser, but rather a light-based Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. Popular hair removal techniques that provide long-term results are often categorized as a laser because IPL and laser technologies use photons of light to produce heat, killing the hair follicle. However, laser hair removal using IPL is not technically a laser-based treatment but rather a light-based one.

The benefits of IPL Hair Removal over the laser are that it allows us to treat all skin types and tones, and the treatment times are shorter and faster when treating large areas such as the legs and back. It also emits an intense pulse of the entire spectrum of visible light rather than a single wavelength, as seen in laser light.
If past laser hair removal treatments were uncomfortable, IPL hair removal treatments are much more mild in terms of discomfort than most laser treatments on the market—one of the main reasons we use this modality for hair removal here at CARE!

Laser Hair Removal (For Facial Hair Removal)

We use the Fotona TimeWalker laser hair removal platform to treat unwanted facial hair. This high-performance Nd:YAG laser system features FRAC3 technology, setting a new standard for safe and effective hair reduction by targeting hair follicles with selective and homogenous photothermolysis. Safe for all skin types, the Fotona TimeWalker laser halts the natural hair growth process without affecting the surrounding tissues thanks to its unique Adaptive Square Pulse (ASP) technology. The ASP technology also allows the laser’s temperature to increase only in the targeted areas without depositing unnecessary energy onto the skin.

Depending on the size of the treatment area, three to five sessions every six to eight weeks will result in a visible reduction in unwanted facial hair.
